Influencer business license in Austria: registration, taxes, insurance
If you regularly earn money from collaborations in Austria, you are usually self-employed and need to take care of your business license (Gewerbe), taxes and social insurance. This article gives a general orientation — which obligations apply to you is clarified by the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO), the tax office and your tax advisor.
When influencer work counts as self-employment
A hobby becomes self-employment when you pursue it regularly, on your own account and with the intention of making money. For creators this is usually the case once paid collaborations, affiliate income or your own products come into play. Products you are allowed to keep in exchange for a post can also count as income. The exact line between a hobby and a business is not always clear and depends on what you actually do. So settle the question early instead of waiting until your income has grown — corrections after the fact are usually more work.
How to register an influencer business in Austria
Whether you need a business license (Gewerbeberechtigung) for your work, and which one, depends on exactly what you do — for example advertising services for brands, photography, selling your own products or work that is more artistic. Not every self-employed activity is a Gewerbe. The start-up services of the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO) advise on this and help you choose the right type of business. You register with the responsible trade authority, often online via the Business Service Portal (Unternehmensserviceportal). With the business license you become a member of the WKO. Get advice before registering so your business license and your work match.
Influencer taxes in Austria
Income from self-employment is subject to income tax. You register your activity with the tax office and receive a tax number; your tax return usually goes through FinanzOnline. On top of that comes VAT. For small businesses there is the small business rule (Kleinunternehmerregelung): if your revenue stays below a certain threshold, you don’t have to charge VAT. Check the current threshold and conditions with the tax office, the WKO or your tax advisor. If you work for companies in other EU countries, separate VAT rules apply, which you should clarify in advance.
Social insurance for the self-employed
In Austria, self-employed people are generally insured with the Social Insurance Institution for the Self-Employed (SVS). With a business license, the insurance generally begins when you register. If you work self-employed without a business license, you can also become subject to mandatory insurance above a certain income threshold. Contributions are based on your income and are often assessed provisionally at first and recalculated later. Set money aside for this so a back payment doesn’t catch you off guard. If you also have a job, that can change things — the SVS itself advises on this too, ideally before your first income.
What this means for your orders on creatordeal
On creatordeal you act as a self-employed business owner. During verification you choose whether you bill as a private individual or as a company. Your tax number is required. You need a VAT ID (UID) if you are not a small business or if you work for companies in other EU countries; it then appears on your credit note and is checked by us. As a small business without cross-border sales, it is optional. You set once in your settings whether you use the small business rule. You don’t write an invoice: creatordeal settles through self-billing, and every payout comes with a credit note as a PDF. creatordeal does not check any business license and does not pay any taxes or contributions on your behalf. As a platform, creatordeal is legally required (DAC7) to report your income to the tax office; for that, we need your date of birth, tax number and country before the first payout.
What this article does not replace
This article gives a general overview and is not tax or legal advice. Whether you need a business license, which one, how you are classified for tax purposes and whether you are subject to mandatory insurance depends on your personal situation and can change with new rules. Binding information comes from the start-up services of the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO), the tax office and the Social Insurance Institution for the Self-Employed (SVS). For your personal planning, a tax advisor is the right contact, especially if you also have a job, work abroad or sell your own products.
